THE PROBLEM

Pedalheads finally made the leap to build their own pool, a very time-consuming and costly endeavour. With their usual clientele being on the other side of The Lions Gate Bridge, they needed to find a way to entice parents to use the new facilities.

THE SOLUTION

Knowing that they have a loyal social media following, I suggested we make animated ads to place organically and paid on social channels to get the word out. This was a great opportunity for the new characters to shine and a quick way to show the pool location’s benefits.

Working with copywriter Marcus Wreland and creative director Andrea Van Der Ree, I put together a set of ads that show how convenient the long class times and mall location are for parents. We used punchy lines that show a variety of tasks busy parents can get done during their hour off such as shopping, relaxing, or pampering themselves!

The animation is bouncy and bright, telling the story quickly to keep viewers engaged. I developed new parent characters to go along with the existing children which helped to grow their brand assets.

The static and in-person ads share the same aesthetic as the video ads but keep the messaging more simple.

There were also static versions of the ads made to provide options to Pedalheads’ marketing team. Some versions of these ads were organic and others were paid to reach new audiences.

Results

The Park Royal pool location is bustling with kids and has a steady flow of registration ever since opening day. The ads are neutral about timing which made the marketing team very happy so they can continue to use them over the next few years.

Learning Outcomes

I had a lot of fun animating these ads but since I’m self-taught with animation there’s always a couple stumbling blocks when I try new things. Honestly the only problems with these were a few file set up issues and a few failed attempts to make the movements more complex. Ultimately, I think the movements match the style and tone of the brand so, while not everything went perfect, they turned out wonderful and I’m always grateful to have paid opportunities to advance my animating skills.
