“How Simon Impressed a Girl” is written, illustrated, and designed by Tina Furesz. It’s about a young boy that meets a new friend and wants to impress her. He tries to emulate what he’s read animals do to court their ladies using human equivalents that don’t always work out. It’s a sweet picture book full of laughter, failure, and absurdity, that feels relatable and impossible all at once.
The layout of the book is formulaic. It’s easy for young readers to follow and balances the story with the illustrations which rely very heavily on each other. The type choice is fun and friendly without losing legibility and is an off-black to soften the overall feel. The process of creating so many images with the same characters and style was an excellent study of consistency in illustration.
